The USF recognises the importance of good mental health, as underpinning your child’s learning. To this end, our Federation offers graduated levels of response for your child’s wellbeing. Please see above for our tiered offer which is designed to meet children’s needs at different times in their life. Our Federation wellbeing lead is Alix Harding, who works with various other staff members within the Federation to promote the importance of good mental health and support your child’s emotional needs.

If you are concerned about your child’s emotional wellbeing, please contact the relevant Mental Health Champion Leader. You can do this by emailing admin@stmarys-brixton.devon.sch.uk who will then pass this on for you.

Emotional Health

This is a new website for parents to help support children’s emotional health. The website is funded by Health Education England. It is designed to help parents find useful resources to support children’s emotional health from babies to young adults. There is good general information and also local information on counselling, charities, local CAMHS and parenting groups for the South West.

We are excited to have adopted the MindUp Curriculum!

This is a curriculum that helps children focus their attention, improve their self-regulation skills, build resilience to stress and develop a positive mind set in both school and life.Emotional Health 7

Following on from evidence-based research in Neuroscience, Mind Up teaches children about their brains and how our human brain can affect our emotions, thoughts and behaviour. It promotes compassion for ourselves and others, optimism and gratitude.

Our Pre-frontal cortex is our wise owl. It helps us to make wise and rational decisions, problem solve and learn.

Our Amygdala is our guard dog. It helps to keep us safe, but it reacts without thinking and that is not helpful sometimes. We must manage our guard dog!

Our Hippocampus is our elephant – a memory storage centre.  Like an elephant, it remembers things. It is linked to our emotions and senses.
